Kerala Primary Education

Kerala Primary education starts with pre-primary institutions just like Anganvadis and play schools where it is the basic stage in schooling. Primary school is further divided Lower primary (LP)[classes I - IV] and into Upper Primary (U P)[Classes V – VII]. Thanks to the kerala government to provide free and compulsory education to all children’s in the age group of 14 years. This comprises the biggest segment of the states education system. Almost every village has more than five primary schools. There are 6,726 lower primary and 2,968 upper primary schools. Of the primary schools 61.07% are private aided, 2.98% are private unaided and 35.95% are government schools.

Kerala High School Education

Kerala High School education is a grade of education system from viii to x, usually for the age group of 14 to 16 and also an entry for higher education. These schools may be controlled by national boards like CBSE or state boards. There are 931 higher secondary schools (HSS) of which 417 are in government sector, 506 in aided sector and 8 in unaided sector. Approximately 5 Lakh students appeared for the SSLC examination –2007. Merit should be decided on the basis of grades.


+2 Schools

In 1997-98 pre-degree courses in 26 Government colleges have been de linked and higher secondary courses have been sanctioned in 103 government and management schools. Since 1998 new schools are added to the list. It is an entry for higher studies. New System of grading is introduced.

Vocational Secondary Schools

It was youngest branch introduced in Kerala at the higher secondary level (+2 stage) in 1983-84. The syllabus covers all the areas where people required training to start new jobs. More importance should be given to practical. There are 322 VHS School (231 Govt. & 91 Private) handling 814 schools of Vocational courses in 45 subjects. Subjects are related to agriculture (livestock management and fisheries), health and paramedical service, business and commerce, home science and humanities and service sectors in engineering and technology. Clothing and embroidery, cosmetology and management of beauty parlours, creche-pre-school management is courses exclusively for girls.


Kerala Higher Education

Kerala Higher Education refers to the education at college or university level, which helps to par excel students in specialized fields of their interest Kerala Higher Education is divided into Graduation (Bachelor's degree) and Post-Graduation (Master's degree). The Mahatma Gandhi University was established on 2nd October 1983, as the fifth University in the Southern most State of Kerala, India. Having off the territorial jurisdiction the development of higher education and higher learning in the Revenue Districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki, Kozhencherry, Mallappally, Thiruvalla and Ranni Taluks of the Pathanamthitta District and Kuttanad Taluk of the Alapuzha District comes under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi University. Mahatma Gandhi University has 10 Inter disciplinary Schools of teaching and research and 12 schools of higher learning in Applied Science and Professional Studies, with academic autonomy. The University of Calicut, the second university to be set up in Kerala, came into being in 1968 with the objective of developing human resources in the northern districts of Kerala by extending the reach of higher education and by promoting research in all areas of development with particular emphasis on technology and art and culture of Kerala As many as 262 colleges are affiliated to the University. The University of Travancore, which became the University of Kerala in later days, was established in 1937, much before the birth of Kerala State. Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma was the first Chancellor of the University. At present, the University has sixteen faculties and 41 departments of teaching and research. There are 157 affiliated colleges. Of these, 40 are aided Arts and Science colleges and 14 are unaided.
Of these forty, five are aided first grade Arts and Science Colleges, eight are unaided first grade Arts and Science Colleges, two are law Colleges, four Engineering Colleges, two Medical Colleges, seven aided Teachers Training Colleges, six unaided Teachers Training Colleges, one Ayurveda College, on Homeopathy College, two Fine Arts Colleges, one Music College and one College of Physical Education. The Kerala Agricultural University is the first agricultural university of the Kerala State starts with a aim to provide human resources, and skills and technology, required for the sustainable development of its agriculture. The University have a network of institutions spread over 36 campuses through the length and breadth of the state, consisting of ten constituent colleges, six Regional Agricultural Research Stations, 26 Research Stations, three Centres of Advanced Studies, the Central Training Institute, the Communication Centre, the KAU Press, seven Krishi Vigyan Kendras, the Central Library and various other research .programmes. Medical college:

The first medical college of kerala was started at Calicut, in 1942-43, during the Second World War. Due to shortage of doctors during the period of war, the British Government decided to open a branch of Madras Medical College in Malabar, which was under Madras Presidency then. The Medical School was started close to the then district hospital at Kottaparamba ( now Women and Children's Hospital). The war was over before the medical students completed their course. The Calicut Medical College was again established in 1957 as the 2nd medical college in Kerala. Since then the institution has grown into a premier centre of medical education in the state. Engineering College.

The college of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 and is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India. It is commonly known as CET and oldest and best colleges in India. Now 90 Engineering colleges are functioning in Kerala. Model Engineering college was established in 1989 by the IHRD to provide higher quality of education in kerala. It was established as a self financing college with a fair degree of autonomy.

Agriculture Colleges

Two agricultural colleges are functioning in Kerala. College of Forestry and Horticulture in Thrissur are two colleges functioning in Kerala. The courses of forestry research include silvi-culture, seed technology, agro forestry, tree physiology, tree genetics, tree breeding, tree tissue culture, forest management, wood science, wildlife etc while Horticulture teaches Agro techniques were standardized in various horticultural and agricultural crops. Vegetative propagation techniques have been standardized in mango, jack sapota, Garcinia cambogia, Phyllanthus emblica, Citrus, cocoa, pepper, nutmeg and some selected medicinal plants.


Bachelor of Education [B.E.d]

It provides students with all the knowledge, experience and practical training required to teach students. In Kerala 14,000-odd students undergo B.Ed. training in 137 colleges in different part every year.

The first Polytechnic, was establishment at Palakad in 1980.Model Poly technic College Kallettumkara was established in the year 1993 under the auspices of the Institute of Human Resource Development. Law College: The State witnessed major changes taking place in legal education over the past century. In kerala, legal education system had a long history. The State's oldest law institution dates back to the latter half of the 19th Century. There are two claimants for the title of the oldest existing law college in the State. The Government Law Colleges of Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram may have their own reasons to stake their claim to this position. It has always had a concern for quality legal education. Nursing colleges in India.

Nursing is more a combination of practice and theory. During the period of training the nursing students are assign with jobs in wards and strictly supervised by head nurse-tutors. Ayurvedic Colleges

Ayurveda is one of the oldest traditional form of medicinal system exist in world. The term 'Ayurveda' refers to life and health. Ayurvedic medicine stresses a holistic approach to health. It defines disease as the result of climatic variations, bacterial attack, nutritional deviance, and stress as well as other forms of emotional imbalance; in short, life-style as a whole.
