The cultural city of Kerala, Thrissur is very famous for its wide varieties of festivals or Pooram. Can anyone forget the charm of Thrissur Pooram ever in his life? Like Thrissur Pooram, Peruvanam Pooram stands for its unique experience. Peruvanam Pooram is held yearly (March to April) at Peruvanam Sree Mahadeva Temple at Cherpu in Thrissur district. The temple dates back to the sixth century and depicts the architectural beauty of Kerala tradition. It is said that the new version of the Pooram has been in existence for 1428 years.
Legend says that the present Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) was originally a tree on which Lord Shiva meditated. The sight of the procession carrying the deity Shiva atop a caparisoned elephant along with six other jumbos accompanied by traditional percussion is a visual treat. One of the highlights of the Pooram is the four-hour long Panchari melam, which starts past midnight followed by fireworks.
